Breakfast and Brunch in Greece - an overview

Breakfast in Greece is not a big event. Most start off with bread and preserves, a pastry savoury or sweet and fresh fruit often with yoghurt and honey. Greek coffee is of course the order of the day traditionally enjoyed in northern parts with a pastry called a bugatsa. Greek coffee is identical to Turkish coffee and can be ordered without sugar (sketo), medium-sweet (metrio), or very sweet (glyko) but it is not served with milk. Many people supplement this light breakfast with a mid morning snack which might include bread, meat and cheese. |

In Greece we have what are classed as pancakes but more just batter fritters (i.e. small and fat and crispy on the outside). Served with loads of Greek honey and cinnamon they are scrumptious1 Zanna 10/08/06
I just came back from spending three weeks in Greece. The breakfast food I missed the most is something I found throughout the streets in Thessaloniki called Bugatsa. Bugatsa is a delicious (but probably very (fattening) pastry filled with creme in the middle. It is served hot with
