Breakfast and Brunch in Costa Rica - an overview

The national dish of Costa Rica is gallo pinto, which translates as ‘spotted rooster’. This is probably a good description as it consists of fried rice and black beans, lightly spiced, usually served with sour cream and either fried or scrambled eggs for breakfast. This is a hearty meal often accompanied by hot chocolate or agua dulce, which is water with processed cane sugar. |

Gallo Pinto has to be my all time favourite breakfast. Musn't forget fried plantain and the obligatory salsa lizano. Beau 22/05/07
I love Gallo Pinto! Where I was in Costa Rica, it was traditionally served with a slice of fresh white cheese and fried eggs. Agua Dulce or Hot Cocoa were not acompaniments.
